Abstract:
Efficient Cargo Handling Forms The Foundation Of Port Performance And Directly Influences National And Global Trade Logistics. At V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, Thoothukudi, Operational Inefficiencies In Cargo Handling Have Led To Rising Vessel Turnaround Times, Port Congestion, And Diminished Productivity. This Paper Examines The Root Causes Contributing To These Inefficiencies, Including Outdated Infrastructure, Manual Handling Processes, Workforce-related Challenges, And Poor Interdepartmental Coordination. The Study Employs Both Qualitative And Quantitative Methods, Incorporating Primary Data Collected From Port Stakeholders And Secondary Performance Metrics. Results From Correlation And Chi-square Analysis Indicate A Strong Relationship Between Cargo Handling Practices And Operational Delays. Strategic Recommendations Are Provided To Address These Challenges Through Automation, Workforce Development, Digital Transformation, And Policy Reform. This Research Offers Actionable Insights For Port Authorities And Policymakers To Improve Port Efficiency And Support India’s Goal Of Becoming A Leading Global Logistics Hub.
